Health & Vaccinations

Travel Clinic & YELLOW FEVER

Look at the CDC website http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/rwanda
for all you should  be up to date on for Rwanda. Find a local travel clinic to advise you on what you need, based on your immunization history and health needs. Do this as soon as you can, as some immunizations and medications need to be taken a month in advance. Yellow Fever Vaccination is required for entry into Rwanda. You will need a yellow vaccination card from your doctor.

Traveler's Insurance

Travel Insurance is required as part of your traveler agreement. A plan with complete cancellation coverage (in case the trip is cancelled for any reason, you can recoup all your expenses) is required. If you consider all your preparatory costs, the program itself, and your flight, your total to cover may be around $10,000. Medical travel insurance is also required. Your regular health insurance coverages are not likely to apply overseas. You can sometimes get travel insurance through your credit card companies such as AMEX, so be sure to ask them. Legally Half Sky Journeys can't endorse any particular company. We are not an expert on what each provides. Here are some resources to help you:

Your signed agreement + Travel Insurance

These two things are required for you to participate in the program!  If you haven't yet, please review, sign, scan and return a copy of the participant agreement:
As you'll see in the agreement, you need a travel insurance policy that covers your entire trip and all related expenses (flight, program, purchases, etc.). You need medical travel insurance too. You may be asked to show proof of your coverage to participate.

Tips about flight planning dates

11/1/2015

Regarding your flight planning, days & nights, etc. here's what you need to know:

Airports: The main journey program takes place in Kigali, Rwanda. The airport is (KGL). Look VERY carefully at flight durations, as well as take-off and landing dates! Remember that we lose a day going to Africa, so you may need to leave as early as Dec. 1 to arrive in time for Dec. 3rd.

Main Program Dates:
Afternoon of December 3rd - Morning of December 11

Gorillas Dates:
Mid-day December 11 - morning December 13th.

Tanzania Dates:
Morning Dec. 13th - Afternoon December 17th. (fly directly out of Kilimanjaro Airport JRO in Tanzania).

Days and transitions in detail:
    •    The program begins on December 3rd. Travelers will arrive throughout the day, and we’ll welcome you right at the airport. The official kickoff will be a dinner that evening, so arrive as early in the day as you wish, but preferable before late afternoon/early evening on the third.
    •    The main program ends on the morning of December 11th, so December 10th is the last included hotel night of the main program. In the morning of the 11th, we’ll have a group breakfast & farewells & free time.
###

    •    For those doing the Gorilla Trek, we’ll depart mid-day on the 11th.
    •    If your trip ends after Gorilla trek, you can book a return flight from Kigali on the 13th.
    •    If you want to do the Tanzania/Serengeti Safari, we’ll depart on the 13th, and go on an incredible adventure that ends in Tanzania on the 17th.
    •    If you are doing the additional Tanzania safari, you can choose to book your return flight out of Tanzania, from the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), instead of out of Kigali. If you prefer, we can help you book a flight back to Rwanda to return home (this flight is not included in program costs, estimate $300-$450 one way.).

When you do book your flight, send us a copy of your itinerary, plus a scan of the front page of your passport right away. rwanda@halfsky.org
